Do you own a dog, and if so, where do you keep your dog, inside the house or outside?

I have always felt that the best place to keep one's dog is on the outside of the home, and this is where we have always kept our dogs, when we did have dogs. Only when the dog was at the puppy stage would we let it run around in the house, but after it reached a certain maturity, as far as we were concerned, it belonged outdoors. I know there are some people who like to keep their dogs in the house with them, and the dog is even treated as part of the family.

Keeping one's dog on the outside of the house is also good since the dog would be able to keep out would-be intruders.

I have two dogs right now. They live inside the house and are a part of our family. I have a Boston Terrier, who is 6 years old, and he loves to lay on my lap or next to me on the couch. My other dog is a pit bull, who is 8 months old and is also a part of our family. They both sleep with me at night and it is very comforting. My children love having dogs and it is very good for them to learn responsibility for taking care of them. I have known many people who would keep their dogs outside but I just cannot do it. It gets too cold here in the winter time for them to be outside, so that is really not a good option at that time.

This is actually the first dog I've had where it is only kept in the house. In the past it was always outside guarding the premises. But now that I have my own place, I wanted something smaller this time around and wanted a dog that wouldn't demand so much space. He's easier to clean up after and can't really create too much havoc because of it's size.

In countries where winter is experienced and it gets very cold, it is understandable why one would want to keep their dogs inside at such a time. However, here in the tropics, that would not be an issue, so most people generally keep their dogs outdoors. However, small dogs like chihuahuas would usually be kept indoors. Dogs that are kept indoors would also need to be well trained, since when friends come to visit, these dogs would have to be restrained and not make the visitor feel uncomfortable. Also, there are some people who are afraid of dogs, so if they know that you have dogs in the house, they may opt to stay away.

We keep our older dogs outside our home but my dad built cages complete with a mini kiosk for them. When it rains or it's extremely hot, they're completely safe inside their mini kiosk. One of our dogs, since she's still a puppy, lives in a cage positioned along our garage. We take them out for a stroll every now and then. Dogs are rather unruly so we try to minimize the potential damage by not letting them in the house, but they can roam freely in the garage.

When we made a decision to have dog, we knew that the dog will be living with us inside the home. Our winter is brutal so there is no chance of keeping him outside at all. He went outside to play and did his business, but if I went in, he went in! I wouldn't let him out there by himself even if we have fenced in yard. You can't trust anyone nowadays, especially when I have a bad neighbor next door who is into drug.

To us, a dog is a family member and to keep him separately from us is just too sad!

The pup stays inside unless he obviously wants to head out. He is given quite a bit of freedom, but he mostly prefers to stay inside and hang out. He is a very relaxed dog but he springs into action and is hyper as can be at a moment's notice, so all I have to do is ask him if he wants to go outside and he will let me know with his behavior real quick.

My dog stays inside the house only. I don't have the kind of situation (backyard etc) where I could let him go in and out as he pleases. There have been times I've taken him with me to visit friends who have patios, yards, etc. I'm nervous to let him roam around since that's not what he's used to. Often he just noses around a little and comes right back to my side -- I guess because that's what he's used to.

My dog stays inside, mainly because I live in an apartment and I would never leave them on the balcony. They are like my children, and I would be too worried to leave them in the cold during winter. I also feel that my dog is a part of my family, and I wouldn't make any of my other family members sleep outside. I have had multiple friends telling me that a dog belongs outside, which I do not understand, to be honest, but to each their own.

The latest dog is a indoors pet. He is too small and too high maintenance to be left outside. No way would I leave him outside over night. His hair is long and it would get really matted and dirty. I can't be cleaning him all the time.

We always kept them outside, and just occasionally letting them in.

Like at fireworks' night or when they were sick or scared. Also small puppies and kittens are allowed inside because they are too young to understand and make a habit from it and too cute to say no 🙂

I have never lived with a dog who had to live outside.

Currently, we have five dogs and they are all part of the family. I cannot imagine the stress we would feel if one of our dogs had to sleep out there. We would be so worried about them. It is a good thing that my girlfriend and I feel the same about this. We put up with some negatives.

We are also grateful for the fact that we have a large back yard as that helps relieve some of the stress of having so many dogs living with us.

I grew up on a farm. So of course they lived outside, inside, where ever they wanted. At times I remember taking the ATV out for a spin and watching our 6 dogs bound around enjoying the open spaces. We had 2 mixed breeds, but the rest were pure bred german sheps. I loved those guys, I was so sad when I had to move to dorms in Uni. No pets allowed whatsoever. Now I live in an apartment that still doesnt allow pets. Sad.

I live in the tropics, so we don't have to worry about winter and the cold. My mother is not a big fan of dogs, so she wants to keep them outside. I think they actually prefer the outdoors, since they love to run around in the lawn and roll around in the grass. I've also noticed that one of our dogs has a habit of sunbathing when it's really sunny. She lies on her back and just basks in the sun.
