Recently there has been advice to remember that in the summer the pavements get very hot and your dog can burn his paws and even get blisters because of it, what precautions to you take in the summer for your dog? Mine has to have suncream on his nose and because he loves to lie out in the sun we have to make sure we get him in the shade as often as possible.

I make my dog walk on the grass not the sidewalk because I often worry about the hot pavement. When I go for walks in the summer I take the water hose to my dog and get her soaked so she isn't overheating and I get her to walk in the shade of course. I don't know of anything else that can help her with the heat.

If I can't comfortably stand barefoot on the pavement because it's too hot, either we walk somewhere else (like drive to a state park and walk on shaded cool hiking trails) or I put boots on the dog or we skip the walk.

To avoid those things, we usually take our first walk very early in the morning while the pavement is still cool. That way, if the weather is bad or too hot for our second walk, he's at least gotten one long walk and can just go outside to potty. If it's hot out later, my senior dog would rather nap in the A/C than be outside anyway. Sometimes I'll be outside doing stuff in the yard and he will go to the door and look unhappy until I let him back inside.

If it's over 90 degrees outside and sunny but he has to be active outdoors for a long period, I also have a swamp cooler vest for him. Basically, you get it wet and it keeps the dog cool as the water evaporates. Spraying the dog with water or giving them a baby pool to lay in has a similar effect.

There have been some stories locally about police having to break into cars because people have left their dogs inside without an open window, it's so irresponsible, I can't believe people still do that.

I had no idea about the hot pavement thing since I saw a post on facebook, and well, I don't really take my dogs out when the sun is really strong, I usually walk them out really early in the morning or at night.
Well, sometimes we can't really stick to that time and when we need to take them out in the afternoon, specially on this time of the year, we always make sure of walking where there are a lot of trees, that way the sun wouldn't affect him directly.

My dog is a Bichon Frise and I live in Texas where the summer heat is BRUTAL. When I was reading up on this breed I learned that they overheat easily. I make sure he has lots of water and when he starts panting quickly, I bring him inside to cool off.

I've heard the rule is that if you can pay your hand on the pavement without burning it, you shouldn't walk your dog on it either. I don't like walking my dogs during the afternoon, because I hate the extreme heat and sun. But I've been seeing more walkers who put shoes on their dogs to prevent them from burning their feet. That might be a great alternative if your dog loves to walk in the afternoon.

I usually keep my dogs away from pavements due to that. They get really miserable when the place is hot and they have to walk on them ( or in the road). I limit the amount of time spent on them and let them move around in grassy/dirty areas.

My dogs normally will walk on the grass and avoid the pavement. They do need to drink quite a bit more water during this time of the year so I always make sure they have access to some fresh clean water.

Well, we haven't had problem with paws but Joe (in the picture) is obviously a golden retriever and he really doesn't like the heat. I mean he likes everything of course, dogs really do not hate, but he can barely stand it. I put a bucket of water on him almost everyday :), not literally of course but it's not far from the truth. The have the coat and the undercoat and they enjoy winter much more then summer. We are lucky to have the river so close to us so the refreshment is near by.

I advice the dogs always need a bath in the summer. Everyday we have to cool them off. It can make the dogs safe in some sorts of sickness.

I usually just carry my dogs until we're at the park and mostly stay around the shade and not spend too long on walks in the pavement.

We do the walks in the afternoon, where the temperature of the pavements already went down.
I am also taking them into bath in the morning so they could feel fresh and comfortable even though the sun is heating already.

For me in order for the dog to get refresh during summer specially when the weather is very hot, I make sure to take him a little swim underwater, so that her skin will be washed with cold water during lunch because that is the time the temperature rises to maximum level. And every morning that is the time we are going to take a walk in the park with the dog because the air is much colder.

I don't walk my dog until sundown during the summer. During the summer i usually walk my dog when the sun is setting down and the pavements are cool enough. We just do indoor activities in the morning and have lots of nap:p.
