I believe Pit Bulls get a bad rap. Some of them may look a little scary, especially when they have had their ears docked. However, all of the Pit Bulls I have ever had the pleasure of meeting have been so sweet and affectionate! Case in point, my dog Bruce. He's a big, beefy pitty. When I take him for walks, people often comment on how intimidating he looks. He happens to be the sweetest dog. So patient and loving. I have never for a second worried that he would do anyone any harm.

I am a firm believer that dog temperments are a product of their environment. If a dog is raised with love and kindness, you will have a fairly even tempered dog, no matter the breed. And it goes the other way as well. Dogs raised in cruel, abusive environments tend to be aggressive. Pit Bulls are no exception. Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

It could be possible they're OK around adults, given certain conditions, but they should never be around children - especially one's recovering from abuse. But I know it's cool to own pit bulls. It's sort of a tough guy thing. However, the safety of kids is more important than an image I think.

I have two pit bulls Bruno and Ichigo. Yes pit bulls are safe with children because I have 5, 8 and 13 years old children and are all playing with my pit bulls. I have heard stories that pit bull bit children but in may case my dogs are treating my children as they treated me.

Many people think that pit bull is a dangerous breed of dog. But i think it depends on the way any breed of dog is being race because if they feel love and care they will love back and not become aggressive while if they are being abuse they will feel fear and instinct to be aggressive and defend their self.

Exactly apollo0915, I raised and treated my dogs the way I wanted them to treat each and every member of my family. Dogs here at home are not just dogs, they are part of my family.

Well, with what I saw, there was a recovering pitbull in a family with at least one kid under the age of 4. The kid would even pet the dog. Therefore, I consider it a case of child endangerment - simply cause the dad wants to be a tough guy. I mean, there's a good chance the dog could tear off the toddler's face.

Big animals can be around children. However, pits, especially if abused or recovering, are simply a dangerous breed - because they were bred for pit fighting - hence the name.

This seems to confirm things.

I disagree. Pitbulls can be great with children. My pitbull sleeps next to my 10 year old, and I rest easy knowing he loves that little girl, and would never let anything happen to her. Of course there are pit bulls who happen to be aggressive, but as I said in my original post, that is due to the circumstances of their upbringing, not because all pit bulls are fundamentally vicious. This is not strictly a pit bull issue. I've seen chihuahuas turned vicious from constant mistreatment. That is a stereotype that prevents thousands of perfectly lovable pit bulls from finding their forever home. I also want to clarify, my dog is not a status symbol for me. I didn't adopt him to appear tough. I adopted him because he needed a home, his temperament meshed well with my family's, and because he is the sweetest dog I've ever loved.
