Does anyone have any experience or know anything about therapy dogs? I have an autistic toddler and I really want to look into getting him a therapy dog one day. I'm under the impression they are not cheap, but they are extremely effective. I would love more information about them if anyone happens to have any. Cheers!

I have one he is old now but still works, he didn't cost much I got him as a puppy from a friend. He is a toy poodle and he can tell if your blood sugars low. He could do that he was not trained too. Most dogs can be trained to do what you want them to with a little time. My mom got her dog from a trainer and it costed a bit more, she used the people in the link below to find hers.

I also know that there are several places with therapy dogs where you can spend a day. If you are getting a therapy dog, you should introduce dogs to the person who needs them, first.

That is true, they should pick them self’s as they are the ones who will work together. In Idaho they can be any type of dog and can be trained by anyone so long as the are trained well enough to obey the rules. Mines not a service animal he was a therapy dog, though he is registered in this state he don’t have to be.

I would love to know how to train my dog for medical services as it would be such a fantastic gift. I might still look up to where to get him trained because he is a very good dog and he listens to command very well. He has a sweet temperament and such great disposition to be a service dog.

As much as I'm aware, there should be schools of sorts available in your location for training therapy dogs. There are obedience tests the pooch will have to pass before getting awarded with their service vest.
There is another option that some may not know about and that's the Emotional Therapy Dog route. You can also check the National Service Animal Registry for information.

Caring for a dog is already a therapy in itself, that's how I feel about. But with an autistic child, I guess it would depend if the child wants a dog. My husband's nephew is autistic and his parents spoiled him by giving him what he wants. At the age of 5, the boy had already destroyed 3 expensive cellphones of his parents.

When the boy was 12, he wished for a puppy so the parents bought a shih tzu. It's a good thing that the older sisters of the boy saw what he was doing - picking the puppy by the tail and playing with it while holding the tail. So there, not all children love dogs regardless if he is normal or not.

Not every autistic child need to be with a dog. When you check how their behaviour is, it depends on what you can get for me. Therapy dogs are quite expensive but if you can afford for your child, it's a very good thing to do.

Well, being autistic or not, I needed dogs growing up as my emotional support animal. My puppy helped me so much to cope with having anxiety. If I didn't have my dog growing up, I wouldn't know how I would turn out.

Dogs are the best human companionship in all ways. Emotionally and Psychologically are what dogs helps us to get better. Though they can't talk but I really love it when they chose to stay with you if there's pain.
