I have a mix dog of boxer and pit bull almost 2 years old. He has short hair but he sheds continuously. I have to vacuum my house constantly to keep the hair down, and brush him at least three times a day. I also changed his dog food trying to find a better one for his skin and coat; and finally settled on Purina Pro Plan with Salmon.
Nothing has helped really! He still is shedding like crazy. Do you have any new tips and tricks that would be good for me to try?
Maybe he is dehydrated? I know that it can cause extreme shedding, also maybe if the season is currently changing, many dogs shed a lot between seasons.
You should ask the vet about it, maybe they can give you a few tips, and look after the possible dehydration.
I used to have this problem with a puppy I was babysitting. It was like this dog exploded fur. No matter how much I brushed him, kept him hydrated, and made sure he was getting the right vitamins, he dropped globs of fur wherever he went.
Concerned, I took him to the clinic. The vet's said that it was the change of seasons, but that he might also be stressed. New location and whatnot. Has anything happened that might be stressing your dog? Or maybe it really is just seasonal shedding. The weather's been weird all over the world--maybe it's affecting our pets too.

I know for sure that he is not dehydrated @puli93 and @Valerie ! I think it is season changing at this time of year, and his shedding is worst, but he sheds throughout the year. My house, my car, and my couch are filled with his hair. I am just tired trying to keep up with this problem, lol..
I might look into the vitamins for him!
He's probably in a mixture of a seasonal change of coats and another underlying problem. Vitamins might help, but vitamins usually mean that something about his food isn't agreeing with his body's needs. I'd personally get his blood checked, but if you can't manage that, I'd say upgrade his food a little.
Although its often a seasonal issue, most dogs will shed a little throughout all but the coldest part of the year, depending on the temperature of their home environment, and on their breed. I have encountered dogs that shed large amounts all year round. If your dog is always like this there is little you can really do about it, its a natural process for the dog and completely healthy and normal. I generally have to vacuum everyday just because of the large amount of hair my lab sheds everyday and I also give her a thorough brush every evening to help her keep her coat as clean and glossy as possible. Shes 10 now and has been like this since she was a puppy, her coat is quite thick for a lab and its never seemed to be a problem for her, or for the vet.
It is definitely a seasonal issue. If brushing and vacuuming is not enough to keep up with the shedding, I recommend a bath. Assuming your dog will sit in a bath long enough to do a thorough shampoo and condition. I have always found that a bath gets more hair out than just brushing and can make you feel like you have gotten on top of the situation. If your dog does not sit well for baths, then try having them spend more time out side. That way they can get the hair off on the grass instead of your couch.

My mom used to feed our family pet Blondie, yellow lab, half a cup of cottage cheese with a table spoon of olive oil once or twice a week. If you mix it in with the dog food, it will drastically reduce the hair loss. Don't do it during the spring when your dog is losing its winter coat. Some dogs though are just shedders though. What kind of do you have?

I have a mutt: boxer mixed pit bull! Thank you for your tip using cottage cheese and olive oil. I wonder if the cheese will give him an upset stomach since he is very sensitive with his stomach. I have come to conclusion that he is a shedder. I have never thought that short hair like him can shed that much 🙁
Vitamins, meats and water are a great necessity for dogs. And another why dogs shed hairs were because of the season. Vitamins and water will always go a long way to help them to maintain their hairs.
