If you have dogs and cats or other pets, how do they get on?

I was just going to ask about dogs and cats, but there have to be people with other pets and dogs, and I'd love to know how your dogs react to other animals. I've seen a range of ways dogs and cats can react to each other, from dogs you wouldn't trust near a cat, to cats that bully much larger dogs. One of my friends has a collie whose life's desire is to herd her four cats, but one swipe of a lazy paw in its vague direction and it gives up. Apparently cats are tougher than sheep, and it learned early not to put its nose in range. The most unlikely one was a full-grown Alsation mercilessly lorded over by a 6 pound tabby that it had virtually raised from a kitten.

So how do yours get on? And if you have something more unusual like rats, geckos, or house-rabbits, please feel free to add your experiences. I'm really curious.

In the past I've had dogs and cats both together but they've been brought into the house at the same time so they've got used to each other from an early age.

I think if you've already got one animal and then you bring another one in, I'm sure that might cause an issue as they won't want a newcomer invading its territory. Eventually they'll get used to each other I think, but while they are doing there might be a few squabbles you have to deal with!

Yes, they will likely end up being used to each other. As for dogs, they usually seems like newcomers, I'd say even too much. At least that's what I've noticed. 😀
It appears that my cat didn't really care about 2 puppies appearing.

It depends on what kind of characteristics does your dog have. Most of the dogs do get along with other animals in general, but those who have bad traits will act like that. Dogs may act pretty alerted when being around other animals which is just in their instincts. They're ready to protect themselves from other animals, even when they wouldn't mean no harm. Though, I'd say out of all the pets dogs are the ones that come a long better with other animals, unlike pets like cats etc.

My dogs are nice. They don't hurt people or even other animals. If they see something that looks strange, like a cat or mouse, for example, they would be curious and would watch closely. They would go closer and smell the other animal as if they were investigating.

My dogs get along great with my cat! I have an English bulldog, beagle mix named Jaxx, an a French bulldog, beagle mix named Axel. My 20 pound black cat is named Elliot.

When we first brought Elliot home the dogs were super excited. Elliot was pretty mellow, and didn't care that there were dogs in the house until my dogs started playing a bit too rough. Elliot ended hissing, and swatting them in the face, and now they get along great! Elliot showed Jaxx, and Axel what his boundaries were, and what he is, and isn't okay with.

I also have a degu named Conker. The story is a bit different there, the dogs love to watch Conker as long as he's in the cage. As soon as Conker gets put into his ball to run around the house, the dogs have to be put outside, if not, they'll tear him to shreds. Elliot on the other hand, doesn't care, and simply enjoys watching Conker from afar.

I don't trust Jaxx, and Axel at all when it comes to Sparta, my leopard gecko. They act innocent towards him until they get close enough to snap at him. Sparta is pretty oblivious that there's 2 monsters out to get him so whenever I take him out I do it in a separate room to make sure he's safe. Elliot likes to stalk Sparta, but he hasn't tried anything, yet.

I have had four cats when I was younger and then one dog. We got the dog, named Polo, earlier than the four cats. One of the cats, named Miki, came first before the other cats since they were her offsprings. Anyway, no matter what we do, we cannot bring them together, Miki and Polo. For one, Miki is a house cat, she resides inside the house. Polo lives in our garage and since he isn't trained to do his number one and two, he has to continue staying outside. Miki, on the other hand, knows that she only has to do number one and two outside or in the litter box, thus she can stay in the house.

Mostly, they are fine apart. But when I shower attention to Miki, Polo gets extremely jealous. Even with feeding time, I'd have to be quick or else Polo will get berserk if Miki's eating and he isn't. Plus, he barks whenever Miki is around which is a lot of hassle because it makes us think that there's a visitor or stranger.

I have a guinea pig and a hamster and my dog is great with them- he's actually pretty intimidated by them. He gets jealous when I hold the hamster, but he'll let her walk all over him when he's laying down (don't worry, I watch him VERY closely). The guinea pig is really sassy so I think he's a bit scared of him- he's gotten his nose nipped for sticking it in the cage a few times!

I've seen animals that live with other species quite well. Most of mine have been rather narrow-minded though. The dogs didn't want to be with the cats; and the cats couldn't stand the sight of one another most of the time.

Though one day my dream is the raise a Shiba Inu puppy and a bunny in unison and have them go on walks in the park together haha. I know it can be done, so I figured, why not?

In the past I've had a dog and hamsters and they got along pretty well. My dog loved to smell their little butts :p
Now I have 2 big dogs that get along with the neighbor's cat and with a big bunch of house sparrows 🙂 The birds eat out of the dog bowls and bathe in the water bowls. They even fight near the dogs and the dogs don't mind them :p

I've had dogs and cats living harmoniously together. When my small dog was top dog and made off with all the toys, she only took the dog ones. The cats ignored her when she yapped in their faces, trying to remind them who was boss. My lab was very quiet and easygoing. She didn't mind kittens playing with her tail when we were all camped on a bed while evacuated for hurricane. They took turns in the SUV barking and meowing whenever we passed a car with animals in it. When the cars had no pets, they were silent. That was the funniest thing. Sometimes the cats hid and pounced on the dogs for fun, but it never lasted long once the dogs wised up. At bedtime, everybody picked their place to settle around me and there's never been a hassle with that.

There was this mysterious pigeon that landed in our frontyard one Christmas eve and stayed with us for 5 years, not in the yard but inside our house. We named her Twinkle because after some days, she laid an egg. We have 2 dogs also inside the house and at first, the dogs were curious because the pigeon doesn't look like them. But after a week or 2, the dogs learned how to co-exist with Twinkle and albeit, Twinkle is even bullying Tisoy the white spitz and Epoy the brown pekingese.

Here is one video that shows Twinkle mingling with our dogs -

Growing up, I had a Holland Lop rabbit, Flower, who was a couple years old when our older Holland Lop died of old age. She was kind of lonely with the backyard all to herself with the neighborhood cats lurking. So mom thought it would be good to get a dog. We had fallen in love with a yellow lab in the mall who was a sweetheart. So mom bought her and we named her Blondie. At first, Flower would just hide and occasionally growl. But eventually, she figured out that Blondie didn't want to eat her and just wanted to chase her and play. So they would run around until Blondie would puppy pin her, not actually bite. Flower would play dead before Blondie would let her go and they would begin again. They would also play with a beach ball were they would pass it gently to each other and Blondie would help Flower get on the ball. Before anyone worries that Flower was really upset about being chased, she used to cuddle up next to Blondie and nap when she didn't want to play. And she would let Blondie know she wanted to play by touching noses before she would dash off. So they were buddies.

My grandma had a golden retriever and anywhere from ten to forty-two cats at any given time. The cats would lay next to Sammy, the golden retriever. There was a great deal of trust, because once the kittens got to a certain age, all the cat mamas would drop off their kittens to be babysat during the day when they went mouse hunting. So depending on the breed, dogs can get along with rabbits and dogs.

When I was growing up, we had plenty of cats around, but only two dogs. One of the dogs lived mostly outside by choice, he had a bed in our garage and a huge water bucket, but he slept in the grass. Our other dog slept in the cat bed, to our cats dismay. This one grew up with cats and thinks of them as her own kind. When she was a pup, her play mate was kittens.

Depending on the temperament of the dog, and its upbringing, they make great partners and friends for many other pets. My pet friend's dog has a friend for life in a cheeky little male parrot. They both have many adventures together, including raiding the cupboard for jerky treats. She's had to be careful where she stores things! Lol.
