Pit bulls and cross-bred pit bulls are banned here in the UK. If someone is found with one, the dog is taken away and destroyed. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that a breed can be banned. It's the owners, not the dogs that make a dog violent.
Pit bulls are already dangerous enough and to have them cross bred is taking it too far. There was a kid in my neighbourhood that was almost mauled to death by a cross bred Pit bull. I won't have them in my state.
I am in full agreement with you. I don't believe in putting any healthy dog down ever and I think it is wrong to take the breed of a dog and just assume that they are violent and need to be put down. I am not a huge fan of pit bulls myself as they do have a tendency to be nasty until they know otherwise but that doesn't mean I agree to them being put down. If someone is willing to take a pitbull on and bring them up to be nice dogs and not vicious then they should be allowed to do that and the dog should be allowed a chance. It's the people who take in pitbulls and train them to be violent that are the issue.
