Great post. 🙂 That part I quoted is definitely an essential piece in training dogs, no matter their age. It's important to remember to give positive reinforcement every step of the way. Patience, too, is huge. Older dogs can learn just as quick as puppies, if not quicker sometimes in an effort to please their human(s).

Another thing to remember is that everyone in the household needs to do as you do when training or re-training a dog. If someone tries something different from the routine, it'll only serve to confuse the dog and make him/her act out.

I would rather go to a professional trainer as an Adult Dog can be harder to train. You should never punish an older Dog and it Should slow. If you really want to teach it yourself, It is advisable to make sure that you are very patient and slow with your training. It might not work the first time, so don't lose hope. Good Luck.

I have a very good friend who is actually very much into dog psychology and who knows how to train dogs extremely efficiently. I have been amazed at some of the things he has trained dogs to do. He has always told me that it's a myth that an old dog can't be taught new tricks. It reminds me of the saying "once a thief, always a thief" which, of course, isn't true.

I believe that it is a huge lie that old dogs cannot be taught new tricks. I once a poodle that I taught the basic commands at a young age(sit, lie down, paw) around age 2. 13 years after that, I tried to test this old myth and I tried to get her to go on two legs at command, and believe it or not it worked! It was nice to see her up and moving around at that age.

The old saying is wrong, you can teach old dogs new tricks. Older dogs understand what you are telling them and very often all you have to do is speak to them. I had a German shepherd that all I had to do was speak to him and he would understand what I wanted form him. i didn't even have to use short words, he could understand short phrases.

I've never ever trained a dog, but the one I had before knew a neat trick, when I asked him to give his paw, he did it. When I was a child I asked this him a lot, always made me excited!

Its not hard to teach an old dog new tricks unless it has reached the age of senility. This can be done using the technique of conditioning where the dog is exposed to stimuli prompting it to act in a certain way followed by a reward. These actions repeated over a certain period of time will inculcate desirable habits to an old dog.

Well I am not sure if you are being philosophical or if you are just asking a basic question about dogs, but I will respond to the latter (I am mostly joking of course). For me, I think that I get to the point where I really have no desire to teach an old dog anything new. I figure that they are content in their space and what they already know, so I just like to let them be. Right now out little guy is plenty young and energetic though, so we are haing trouble reigning him in to calm him down at this stage.

Sometimes, puppies are the kind of development stage which a dog is less likely to be obedient, or trainable. It all depends of the dog breed though. Quite Intelligent breeds are very receptive to training regardless of age, like Boxer, other breeds like the Shiba Inu are significantly harder to train.

Yes I have found it is true that young dogs are easier to train, but that doesn't mean an old dog won't listen. Dogs have been bred for thousands of years to take commands from us, so it is hardwired in them, you just need to know how to get them to express it. There are several books on the topic but the best way I found is through positive reinforcement.

For example, and this is a way simplified example, if you want them to sit, get a hand full of treats and say SIT SIT SIT so you drill it in their head, then after you say it push them down to where they are sitting, then when they are seated give them a reward. now just repeat this about 100 times and over a week and they will get it.
