So I was watching Freelee the Banana Girl and she has some compelling arguments for being a vegan. I get why she's a vegan even though I couldn't afford to do the same. The problem for me is that she makes her dogs be vegan. She refuses to feed them meat because it would cause the death of an animal. This is where I take issue. For one thing, dogs are the descendants of wolves, they are predators who hunt and eat other animals. Just because we domesticated them doesn't mean we've turned them into herbivores. The ironic part is that most vegas use dogs as an example for why humans aren't true carnivores. I'm fine with people choosing to be vegan, we're omnivores so we can live exclusively off plant food if we want to, but I think it's cruel to force an animal into your lifestyle. What do you think?

That's a cruel thing to do. Why would you make a carnivorous creator live a vegan lifestyle. It is unfair to impose your beliefs on others or even animals. I bet if dogs could choose what to do, they definitely would not choose a vegan lifestyle.

Pah, sorry if I get opinionated here.

Life has always been about killing to eat. It's simple as that. I guess it's fine if someone is vegan, but forcing a carnivorous animal live that kind of lifestyle is ridiculous. Meat has always been a part of a dog's diet, and it seems unhealthy too that one would deprive their dog of meat. Forcing an animal that can't control its circumstances to eat something it wasn't created to eat seems cruel, and just plain dumb.

I agree, it's cruel to enforce that on a dog. If you don't want to feed your pet what it is built to eat then don't own one. Get a fish instead. You can't save animals by being cruel to another one.

Well said!...Alternatively they could get themselves a bunney or a hamster.

Dogs need their fair amount of protein and since they can't digest fiber, feeding them foods full of fiber will only lead to straving them to death. Also vegan dog diets can lead to eating a lot of starch which will make the dog put on more fat than muscle and eventually lead to metabolically sick dogs, if they don't get sick from protein deficiency first.

I am a vegan...most of you are misinformed on this subject. Allow me to elaborate.

First and foremost, dogs are not carnivores, they are omnivores. A carnivore is an animal that can only efficiently extract nutrients and enzymes from other living beings. @OutOfSpoons "Life has always been about killing to eat" Let's not invent toilets are smart phones then? Life has always been about not having those, right?

As an omnivore, all research points to the animal being able to extract all of the essential amino acids that it needs from plants. This means that dogs -can- in theory get everything they need from plants, but it would be quite inefficient to do.

In other words, their body is prepared to survive on plant matter, all of their cells in their body can be fueled and repaired by plant matter. To do so with common plants is just simply too hard to meet caloric needs.

Now let's talk about why most of you are misinformed...have you ever checked the ingredients on your dogs dry food? What exactly are you really feeding your animal?

There is an unfathomable amount of hypocrisy in people feeding their dog standard or even the cheaper stuff and then getting upset at dogs being fed plant-based protein.

The cheap stuff is all genetically modified soy, corn starch, industrial byproducts and synthetic vitamins.

There are VERY few vegan based food companies, but most of them are simply varietal plant-based proteins that a human being could eat in high health.

So summarizing, most people feed their dog junk kibble with industrial byproducts in them, but they get upset when vegans feed their dogs complete amino acid profiles from plant-based foods.

Someone called it cruel...these dogs are happy and healthy. You really think someone wants their dog to suffer...someone that gave up meat and animal products to stop animal suffering, no less? No, you associate it with being cruel to the dog because YOU have an opinion on meat. You do not actually see these animals, nor do you interact with them. They are full, they are satisfied with their meal and they are happy. Care to post a picture of the ingredients of your dog food @lisasian86?

@Belovedad They are omnivorous, not carnivorous. Dogs will eat rotten milk and other unpleasant things simply because of access and hunger. If you present a dog with tasty plant-based ingredients versus terrible soy/corn starch food, they will pick the plant-based. The real issue becomes when you only provide access to one and say "see, this is all that works!"

It pains me how often vegans are stereotyped by people that do not realize that they themselves have become the stereotype. They refuse to look up positive research and just repeat and parrot what the masses are saying, aka, a stereotype.

As for vegan being expensive...I can eat like a king on $5 a day pretty easy, could cut it lower if I tried. I don't because I like food so I spend more on it 🙂

-You're letting your vegan bias cloud your logic. Here, https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/canine-nutrition/dogs-carnivores-omnivores/
and article that explains that while dogs can eat carbohydrate-based foods, it's body is still optimized for eating meat because they evolved from timber wolves. Dogs don't have flat death like we do, they have narrow pointed back teeth like true carnivores. They also can't chew side to side like a cow can but in a up-and-down, chop motion for cutting mean. You shouldn't confuse dogs surviving on vegetables to eating with thriving on a diet of meat. Even if dogs might be technically considered omnivorous, they have a strong bias for meat. Here, http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/is-your-loving-kind-fluffy-dog-friend-a-carnivore-or-an-omnivore/ talks about the anatomy of different animals. The GI tracts in a true herbivore is about a hundred feet to process all that cellulose. Omnivores, like humans, have a GI tract of about twenty to forty feet. Cats have the shortest track of about twelve to fifteen inches. Dogs are a little longer at about two feet. There is a case made by Dr. Chris Bessent that while cats are true carnivores, dogs could be classified as scavenger carnivores which would explain why they will eat rotten milk or food if they find it.

Also, feeding you dog kibble thetas 60% carbohydrate or more with little quality proteing will lead to long term problems for you dog. http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/kibble-never-a-good-option/
Just because you can feed your dog plants, and they like it (at least more than the rotting milk), doesn't mean that you are providing proper care for your dog. The highly processed diet of cheap soy, corn, and vegetables leads to rapid aging, degenerative diseases, cancer, and other health problems. So while it's hypocritical for people to feed their pets cheap kibble it's equally hypocritical to feed a carnivore (or omnivore with a strong carnivorous bias) a plant based diet.

Pardon me if this comment run counter to your belief. We sometimes give our dogs boiled squash and a snack of fried sweet potatoes. But that's as far as being vegan for them. My belief is that dogs are omnivore but more on being carnivore. I want my dogs to enjoy their life. What is the use of a long bland life with no delicious food? The love fried fish and chicken drumstick. They also love broiled fish, the best for them.

Again, I can see that our dogs are enjoying the food we give them and they have no health issues.

Before I make my dog a vegan, I would check with the vet first, and do some researches about the health risks and benefits for my dog. He is eating dry dog food, which has everything he needs, and salmon is the first ingredient.

Sometimes, he gets fresh carrots, apples slices, blueberries, watermelon as treat; and sometimes we flavored his food with human food.
