Is there a better way to get these rather than from the vet. They are quite expensive, but so important!

I don't know if there's a place to get it except from vet. If not for the importance of the drops for killing fleas, ticks and to prevent infections, I won't care to go near the vet because of how expensive they are.

It's in your best interest to make use of the vet in this situation because any other option alternative might not be a good thing for your dog. Something might go wrong and you will end up spending more money than your expected to.
