I'm thinking about things like house fires, floods, earthquakes, etc. Often we plan ahead for these emergencies if they are common in our area, but I know some people overlook their pets. I was wondering if anyone has a specific plan in place of how they will save their dogs alongside saving their families if the worst was to happen?
That is a good idea to have a plan in place for emergency situations. I am sorry to say that I didn't think of this before. In my mind, if something happens, I will just take the dog with us wherever we might end up. He is with us 24/7 so when we go, we usually take him with us.
For disasters like those, I do have a basement which is large enough to hold a couple of people including my dogs. I have not really thought further than that as anything or anywhere I go during situations like that, I would just think to bring my dogs with me.
You hear some sad stories of people who have had an accidental house fire or something, and first save the children and then can't return to save the dog. This is what prompted me to think about this.
I would absolutely save my daughter first, if it was a matter of choice. However, our dog's bedroom is by the front door, which is also our fire escape, so I like to think that I would grab my daughter and then run to my dog, and we would all escape together.
If my dog slept at the other side of the house, such as the kitchen, it would be more difficult, so I'm quite lucky in that regard.
Golly do I think about this often. As a child, I used to agonize over what would happen if there was a fire. I lived in a huge house full of pets. What horrified me was the idea of leaving one behind to perish terribly. I often told myself that it depended on what was happening and where how I would go about rescuing my furry family members. If there was a fire, I would the window to my bedroom to ensure escape if anything happened to prevent me from getting further into the house. From there, I'd see if any animal was within reach. If not, I'd go outside and break through different windows to open pathways out.

I don't have a plan in place in case of an emergency. I just know that I would grab him and carry him with me through an open window, down the fire escape or any other exit.
Well... I also really don't have a plan for an emergency, even though in my house we have a lot of rooms I don't really think that they would be safe enough in case of an emergency... I think that I would just grab them and take them to a safe place, but I really need to think about that a little bit more, I guess.
