My friend swears there are two types of dogs - lively playful dogs, and lazy affectionate dogs. I think there are many different types of dogs and no dogs could be completely typecast into one of those two roles.
But assuming there were genuinely only two dogs which would you choose - playful and lively, or lazy and affectionate?
I would go for a more lazy and affectionate puppy. I would love the best of both worlds, but it's not very common to have all in one. My German Shepard is active and playful, but she will never cuddle. Getting her to even lay down with us is like pulling teeth. She likes being secluded and alone when she lays down. My English Mastiffs are huge cuddlers and tend to sleep all day. They will play with us on occasion, but most of the time they just want you to hug them and tell them how great they are, ha ha.
I would also go for the lazy and affectionate ones. But to be honest, we have one dog here, she's a Shih Tzu and she's affectionate and playful. But she can be too playful at times, she even annoys our other dogs because of her attitude. But if you want to cuddle with her, she'll be glad to. She loves being carried and played with. She can also be lazy, like you cannot teach her anything because she won't follow you. I don't really know how to categorise her, lol.
Then we have this other dog, she's also a Shih Tzu and she's snobbish and won't allow to be cuddled. But she's very smart though and very brave as well. She barks and bites strangers all the time, that's why we have to keep her in one room whenever we have people around. But she isn't lazy at all, you can train her. She just doesn't like being touched or carried.
I guess different dogs have different personalities. But if I'd have to choose I'd rather have a lazy but affectionate dog so I can have someone to hug whenever I want to.
I like the affectionate types. I have a Belgian right now and they're pretty active and crazy so a change would be nice. Although when my oldest Belgian was much younger he was quite active but now that he's moving towards middle age he's more chill and affectionate now but he's having a lot of health problems already like the elderly dog that he is but atleast we spend more time just bonding on the couch.
Since I love affection and am a couch potato, you know which type of dog I would choose. I currently have a Bichon Frise. He like to sleep on the bed with me, follows me around the house, and likes being in my lap during the evening. But, most of all, he is happy when I wake up in the morning and he is happy to see me when I come home. I will take those behaviors any day of the week.
I have to confess my dog is a bit Jekyll & Hyde, he is either playful and lively OR lazy and affectionate. If we go for a walk, the second I remove his lead he bounds off with a big grin on his face and sprints faster than the lazy dog I have at home could seem possible of doing. He loves wrestling when he's playful, jumping on top of me. This is great for me as I have different moods too, but if we're not in matching moods together it can be a bit difficult!
I'm a ridiculously active person, so I'd prefer a dog that wants to be on the go and sticking their noses into things. Though an affectionate dog is nice, I'm not a fan of the couch potato breeds simply because I'm don't even own a couch. Where would the poor dear sit? In all seriousness though, playful dogs mean I can teach them tricks, go on trails, travel and have a co-pilot rather than a reluctant sidekick.

Assuming that there are only two types on the list, I am choosing the lazy affectionate type. In reality, my dog is both, active and affectionate in both areas. He plays went we went outside, and lazy when we are busy inside doing other things.
Dogs just like human, they adapt and they got tired with too much activities too 🙂
My pup is a little of both. When she's outside, she loves to run around and play, once inside though she's more lazy and wants to cuddle, especially in the winter months where it's cold out and it gets dark earlier. We'll put on a movie and she'll saunter over to lay down beside me so I can wrap us both up in a warm blanket. I love that she's cuddly but she does snore when she's super comfy.
I can say that both of my dogs are a mix between playful and affectionate. The biggest one loves to play with basically everyone, but he also loves to be with people and being petted. And when it comes to my little dog, I think that he's more playful than affectionate, he loves challenges (even more if there's food on them, lol) but he also loves human contact, he loves to cuddle and sleep next to someone, they are just lovely! 🙂
Luckily for me, my dachshund is both playful and affectionate. But if I were to choose just one, I would go for the playful dog. I think playful dogs are balanced and healthy dogs. They get the exercise they need both physically and mentally. Playful dogs are usually very smart and trainable as well, based on my observations.
I'd much rather have a lively and playful dog rather than a lazy, affectionate one. I love dogs that I can play with and that are active, I'm an active person as well so I couldn't deal with a lazy dog.
Fortunately both my dogs are active throughout the day and affectionate throughout the night, so it works out quite well.
Why not both? A lively pet that gives life to your silent apartment, as well as an affectionate one when they sense that you need some quiet space? It's a really great thing, having a pet, when you have a pet that is in-sync with your own personality and needs, that's why it's great to have a pet that is basically a connection to your own needs.
My dog is getting old, and she definitely falls into the lazy and affectionate category, but she used to be a lot more playful when she was younger. The best part of her being lazy in a sense is that there's not too much risk in having her in that she's not too wild or anything, especially around valuables. However, I do miss frequently playing with her, and wrestling over her toys. She just seems much more disinterested these days, and that makes me sad.
In terms of future dogs, I think I'd definitely like a dog that is a mix of both: they can play and be fun, but they also have that chilled-out aspect that takes away some of the liabilities and risks.
I had two Labradors. I can honestly say that they both fell into both of those categories. I had the most playful, affectionate, and sometimes lazy puppies. They were so loving and playful. But they tired out pretty quickly after chasing balls and bunnies and then slept a lot of the day away. I wouldn't have it any other way. That is why I love Labs so much.
