At the moment we have one dog and two cats and they all pretty much get on with each other just fine most of the time. They enjoy paying together and they are very friendly with each other usually. We did have a guinea pig too but she's no longer with us but we do also have a goldfish. We've never really seemed to ever had a problem with different pets getting along with each other, it's always been fine. A friend of mine also has a dog and bird and they're quite funny together. The bird likes winding the dog up and literally flies down to sit on his head sometimes.

I have observed that dogs interact easily with other animals if they have been brought together or acquainted to be within close proximity of each other in the compound. I have seen a cat lying on top of a sleeping dog suggestive of the fact that they don't even recognise each other to be from different species. Animals should be socialized to each other from a early age.

I think that more often than not, this is successful when the dogs are introduced to other animals as puppies. When they've been used to interacting with cats and order animals ask their lives, it's more likely they'll be more accepting of new additions. It's also harder to get them used to new animals when the dogs are already used to running in packs. Might be easier with individual dogs.

Whether dogs, cats, pigs or even parrots raise them together and they'll treat each other like family. Also, when you're around them don't show your fear that they'll tear each other apart because they can tell. Watch Ceasar Milan's show the Dog Whisperer and you'll know what I mean.

I think it's all about socializing the pets properly - not just throwing them into the same room together and expect them to figure it out, but introduce them to each other slowly and with conditioning (treats, pets) along the way.

I've seen enough adorable YouTube videos to know that it is possible for almost any combination of animals to get along.

A few years back, I had a dog, two rabbits and four parrots. But it was not a problem as the rabbits lived in their hutch and the parrots were in their cage. But even when we used to take the rabbits out, my dog never used to harm them. That dog of mine was a very intelligent and sensible one.

My lovely dog has no tolerance for other animals. He is the sweetest, kindest thing, even to strangers, but when he sees anything else with four legs, he is not happy about it if it is in his own yard. When we go for walks in the park, he doesn't seem to have that problem. It is like he knows that is a public place he can't claim. What I don't get is how gentle he is with children, even babies, he is unfamiliar with, but can't stand other animals in the slightest.

My family has always owned cats, but we have had dogs a few times. Most of the time, there's a period where our cats try to gang up on the dog, but after a while, they just leave each other alone. Sometimes, our cats would even go up to the dog and rub all over him, which was always kind of cute and funny to see. Our more finicky cats would hiss, and run off, and there was an incident where all five of our cats attacked one of our poor pitbulls at once, but they usually get along in the end.
Our dogs have always tried to play with our cats; so far we haven't had an aggressive dog try to eat one of them or anything, but a friend of mine's dog tries to eat cats.

I've only have dogs in my life. However I have a close friend who keeps both a cat and a dog. They appeared in the house almost at the same time, so maybe that's the clue to them getting on quite well. But I do agree that the owner has to make some effort to set the things around and not to expect animals to act as they wish. The right atmosphere is the key to living in peace.

Currently, we only have a dog but half a year ago, we also had a rabbit. My dog gets along with the bunny just fine when we let the bunny out. He will come to sniff her, and she stayed still until he is done checking her out. Then they both go on and just hang out together.

My mom has a black cat who will hide for weeks from any newcomer; human, feline or fido, it doesn't matter which. First he hides, and then he growls and swats, and then finally he grudgingly accepts the newcomer. I think some dogs are like that as well, fearful at first but gradually warming up to the idea. Plus, dogs are smart enough to figure out that another animal in 'their' home is also a family member, just like himself and most will act accordingly. There are some animals who simply will never get along. They just don't like each other much, and possibly never will. People don't always like every person they meet either, so animals are the same way.

I have both dogs and cats. They seem to get a long fine but they like to play a lot which is not okay. The reason this bothers me I usually have to end up releasing my cat from the dog's mouth grip. They don't seem to understand that they are not of the same species and I am afraid that one day, my cat will get seriously hurt.
