I've seen cats fight snakes and other bigger animals like dogs and bigger cats trying to harm their kittens. 

I've also seen cats fight for their kittens from other dangerous animals but I haven't seen a cat fighting and defending other animals rather they will sit and watch the fights.

Cats are very protective of their kittens no matter the dangers ahead of them. But for a cat to be protective of its owner is not possible, they love to live their life for themselves.

I've seen a cat defending a puppy from an aggressive mother dog. I don't know why the dog was getting angry at the little puppy but the cat stood it's ground and take the puppy away from there until the dog calm down.
